The beginning of the year is celebrated across the world with much pomp and splendor. Every country has got its own The New Year is a good time to reflect on the past year and to look forward to the promises of the coming year. According to history, the Mesopotamians first celebrated New Year in the year 2000 B.C. In 45 B.C. as the Julian Calendar came into effect, New Year was celebrated on January 1st. Some cultures use Winter Solstice or Autumn Equinox to mark their New Year.

Every country has its own traditional way of welcoming the New Year. In the US the most popular tradition is the ball drop in Times Square. Colorful fireworks light up the sky in all parts of the world. India also welcomes the New Year with an array of celebrations. Family and friends gather together and engage in activities like singing, dancing, playing games. Adults and children wear their best and shiniest clothes and take part in a lot of fun filled activities with much enthusiasm.

In the New Year, people make resolutions to get rid of bad habits and adopt new ones. They set goals for the coming year and try to achieve it.
